I once ran across a question on jerky-poor power steering on a 450 farmall, and you had some suggestions. Now my 450 is acting up. Where do I start looking?

It is either the priorty valve sticking or the spring is getting weak or there is a plug between the valves that sometimes blowes out and leaks inside . It has been way to many years for me since i had to work on a 400-450 hdy system to even try and remember just where that stupid plug is But that is what it sounds like as that happened to my buddys 450 way back in 69 and we spent a couple days worken on it and and old timer came by and showed us and we drove in a new plug and all was well we had all the valves out of it and mine stuck the priority valve and i used 400 emery and diesel fuel and cleaned it up and it worked fine .

With the limited info we have I'd say Slipping belt under turning load, Priority valve adjustment (if provided) low fluid level, Chattering regulator valving, Worn pump, or hyd. motor. Good Luck

It is factory Behlen, fluid is supplied by live pump. I've got 1500 psi on hydraulic couplers when warm. It also seems to help the steering when I'm dead heading the fast hitch, (raised all the way up)and holding lever in up position. Using Hy-tran fluid.

Sounds like you have one of the valves stuck in the system. Theres one that I believe is a prioirty valve for the steering. Had the same problem on my friends 450 a year ago and can't remember what we did other then replace a couple parts but not sure what they are called

Listen to old - it does sound like a stuck valve. I think steering is supposed to take priority over the lift - but not sure. However, if you determine it's the Behlen unit, you can get one from Bates. Not many of those around these days...
