Sent my mag off to be reconditioned. Now ready to be put back on tractor, Farmall M.

The manual says turn the rotor counterclockwise until the rotor is pointing at No. 1 terminal. Someone has marked an arrow which turns backward when I do this. Is this correct?

Is there a way to test and see if it is firing?

My fan drive pulley has three notches. Two close and one by itself. Top dead center of No. 1 piston is closest to the two notches. Is this the correct first notch the manual talks about?

Double notches are for top dead center. Find TDC at the end of #1 cylinder compression stroke.
The mag (or distributor) should fire when the pointer is between the double notches. The single notch is for checking to see if the timing advance is working when the engine is running at a higher speed.

I hope you know that there talking about the internal rotor and not the rotor under the Cap if you change that you will be out of time and will have to have it retimed. Alls you have to do is turn the trip to get this inline with the #1 on the Cap and rotor. JON

The first notch on the damper pulley should be aligned with the pointer when No1 piston is at TDC
on the compression stroke. You should be able to check your mag for fire by removing the coil wire from the cap and holding it within a 1/4" of
the magneto frame and snapping that impulse coupling. Some that post on here have used variable speed drills to spin the mag when checking for fire. I'm sure whom ever rebuilt the mag checked it for fire.

When you're bringing No1 piston up on compression,
once you feel compression against your thumb stop cranking the engine and drop a screwdriver into plug hole with a thick handle so you don't lose it. Slowly hand crank the engine until the screwdriver quits rising, your first notch should be aligned with the pointer. Then install your mag. Hal

PS: When ever you remove your mag for some reason
you need to look to see where the rotor is pointing in the cap and make a note on paper. Do not turn the engine over once you remove the mag,
this is the same for tractors with distributors.
Very easy to get your engine running and back in time.
