Thought I’d update you on how the 826D did with my newly acquired JD 100 3-point chisel plow. It was an 11-foot ,12-shank with guide wheels and I reconfigured it to a 7-foot, 8-shank... still one foot spacing. I have clay ground in wheat stubble, still fairly hard after a little rain yesterday (no previous rain for two weeks). I was able to pull it 8-10 inches deep (limited by guide wheels) at 5+ mph in 2nd-high, with a very occasional use of the TA and the draft lever on the 3rd notch up from "heavy." Tire slippage on 16.9-34 singles was minimal. Didn’t need the locker. I had 400 pounds of weight up front, none in back. Rear tires were inflated to 16psi. I tried a few rows first with no weights up front and it did OK, but the front weights actually seemed to help it bite better and it definitely steered better. I’m still getting used to noises/behavior and trying to figure out what’s "normal" for this old tractor. I did notice some brake chatter (a groaning chatter) when using one brake to turn at the end of a row, but only after the tractor was good and hot. It did it only a couple of times at the end of the work period. This old tractor hasn’t worked this hard in years because burned of some heavy carbonized gunk on the exhaust that’s been there for years! I love it! It was a nice tractor to work and the controls were easy to reach except the throttle. I don’t like it up above the steering wheel. Anyway, thanks guys for answering all my questions. Your help paid off today in things going pretty well as planned.

Yeah, you're right. That's a big-un and I would wonder if 66hp is enough. I saw some clutivators just like it at a sale last weekend. Thought about bidding but wasn't sure my 92hp would be enough. They wen't pretty high anyway ($1500-1800).

Nothing better that the sound of that old farmall strutting it's stuff!!! Put that chisel in the ground with a straight exhaust stack at night and you can really see the "red" glow... You will soon get use to the throttle lever being behind the steering wheel. You only need to use it to slow that "bad - boy" down!!!

Is there really some real reason you have to till 8 to 10 inches deep??

Every couple years we like to realy get down there like 14to 16 inches and break up the hard pan . One year a buddy of mine was the blockman for DMI and brough in a 5 shank turbo tiger and we had nothing that would pull it so he found a 3788 with duals on all four and it had to be weighted down and the wick turned up and we did everything that spring and never had such a nice corn crop . We need to do it again as the ground is getting hard at the plowsole and the fields are not draining as well .
