Mornin' Guys,

If a feller were to put live hydraulics on an old M, do you have to "consider" the timing gears like ya do with an H?

Were they heavier and 'beefier' after a certain breakpoint?

Thanks,

Allan

Allen,

I feel I need to chip in here since I have an M set up that way for about 40 years now.

My M is a 1950, but off hand not sure if it is an early or late one. The live pump and power steering was put on about 1963 or 1964. The tractor was either under a loader or a corn picker until 1984 when my dad died and the picker went on the 560 Diesel. Since then it has been a loader tractor.

Anyway in the winter of 1968 and 1969 (the worst winter I can remember) my dad just got done pushing snow and the old M died on its way to the shed. Turned out the hub broke out of the camshaft gear. Not sure why, fluke, bad gear, or what, but not problems since then, but the dealer had one so we were off before the next storm hit to get it. We barely got back home before it started snowing to put it together for another push.

In the parts book cover & front plate change at 228082 making it change at mid 1950. The holes are a little different. A M&W pump fits either, it has an elongated hole. The gear doesn't show a # change in the catalog but a lot of old posts indicated they did make a stronger gear, but no one said how to tell. I searched a lot when I got parts to change mine.

Allen, I put live on my 49 M last year. Got a pump from Steelwheel ranch and a new front cover. I couldn't get the front pully off, so i didn't change the front cover. The bottom holes of the pump line up, it is the top ones that are off, I used 2, 3/8 x 6 eye bolts and opened the eyes and made a bracket on the front of the oil fill to pull the eye bolts tight. This works fine, no leaks and it is tight. I didn't change the timing gear. If the timing gear breaks, then I will take it apart. A little red spray paint and you don't even notice the eye bolts

put live system on a '45 h several years ago (10-12). tractor is used around 75-100 hours a year. i bought a new pump for a 300 and got the front plate from a junkyard for a 300. i did not change the timing gears and have not had a problem. only change i made was to add an external tank 2 years ago for more oil capcity than the belly pump had. link is to pictures of set-up i use.

Hey Allan, you got your eye on an M now? I thought you were going after a 666 or similar?

Hi Chad,

Naw, I was just wondering 'bout the old Ms.

Wife says to get at least one more tractor with a cab because I'm gettin' up in years and she says I can't stand the heat and cold like I used to. :>(

So, I'm looking at 986s or 1086s ('cause I can't stand those noisey, ealier cabs!).

Trouble is, the electronics on these things scare me to death. At least with the old mechanical types, I can fix 'em. :>)

However, I gotta worry more 'bout a grain truck, combine and a dryland field cultivator of some sort. Doin' more wishin' than anything at this point. :>)

Allen I have but live hydraulics on many H's and M's the timing gears will handle it it you stop with about 1200 PSI. But the gears in any of the old engines aren't what they use to be.

To put live hydraulics on an M, you would have to change out the front cover and timing gears depending on what year the tractor was made. As they got close to bringing out the Supers, the regular Ms got the updated parts.

The year 1950 sticks in my brain as the cutoff.

Well now you're gettin smart. Get a GOOD tractor. Put live MxW on Puffy, 1940 M and it works fine, will lift the front of the tractor off the ground with the three point bale spike, no problems, no changes. The 1949 loader M put a MxW pump on about two years ago, with power steering, auxilary tank for bigger capacity, Westendorf TA26 belly mount loader, no problems, no changes. I looked at the front covers of these 50-60 year old tractors and thought "Ya right, that's coming off" and just went ahead and put them together. Not saying I WON't have trouble with them, but haven't so far. Thinking about your lost family too biggun. Harley
