Hope someone can help me here. I am trying to remove the large pulley from the drive shaft on a Cub sickle mower. It is the pulley that is connected to the PTO by the belt. It looks like it has a depression in the end of the shaft for a puller, but I cannot locate a set screw or keyway on the pulley or shaft. I don't want to try to pull it off and take a chance on breaking the pulley if I have missed something. Maybe the pulley was heated and then pressed onto the shaft at the factory? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Thank you for all the replies! I love asking a question about a Cub. Lots of great people out there with the knowledge and desire to help. I also have an 8N and a Fordson, and it is tough to get help with the Fordson!
Anyway, the pulley I am trying to remove is the bottom, larger one in the picture posted in one of the replies. I guess it is threaded on, LEFT HANDED. I have been applying the Liquid Wrench for two nights now, and I will take a swing at removing that pulley tonight. Thanks again for all the help.
Matt

Well, I got that pulley off last night, and removed the belt tensioner, which has a broken adjuster bolt. Now I can finish the restoration and then get the sickle out of my garage!
Thanks again for all the help.

Rudi, my Fordson is a 55 Major D with a Johnson dual hydro loader on it. It is the handiest and most dependable little tractor on the farm, and a real FUEL MISER to boot, which seems to be the most important factor right now.
I would like to find an old Irish Fordson on steel some day....

You may need to apply a little heat to get that pulley off. They had an old Fordson on the farm and my late dad could never get it started and they were bad for kicking back and for flipping over. They bought a 10-20 to replace it before I was born in 1926. About as much difference between the two tractors as night and day. Easy to start and was a good belt tractor. Hal

Well, you got a variety of answers.

The larger pulley is threaded onto the shaft and is a LEFT handed thread.

Is your pulley setup the same as in the picture
posted by Rudi? Both of those pulleys are secured with either a bolt or nut. I think they
would've used a woodruff key with those pulleys too. Hal

I have a parts catalog for the Cub 22 mower. From the diagram, it appears the pulley is threaded onto the shaft. It would unscrew in the direction opposite to rotation, as it would be set up to tighten from the action of the belt. The flywheel on the other end of the shaft that runs the pitman is also threaded on. I know this for sure, as I have a NOS flywheel in my stack of parts.

Isn't the big pully left hand threads?

This is the best I can do to help you out.

Would suggest you read the Cub-22 Sickle Mower Manual on the Cub Manual Server - www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html

If I understand you right the pully is pressed on. I just did my mower as I broke the unit badly on a tree. I had to heat the shaft with a torch and keep pressure on it in a press could not get it to move with just a hammer etc. Then had to repeat the process to put it back on. I am not positive we are talking about the same part though. The guys over on the Farmall Cub site are the very best suggest you try them before you go to far.
