600 diesel smokes

I have a 600 diesel that runs perfect on gas, but blows white smoke when running on diesel. I've tried moving the timing all over and found where it runs the best, but still smokes. Doesn't seem to have the power it should either. The fuel pressure gauge on the pump shows high pressure. If the tractor is given a tiny shot of ether, it will run perfect for a minute or two before going back to smoking. I'm not sure what to do now, is it not getting enough fuel somehow?

thanks for the input. I forgot to add, i did have the head done at a machine shop so i know the valves are good. And i also put new rings in it while i had the head off. So i guess i'll start by investigating my injectors.

Run a compression test, it's not real uncommon for the semi-diesels to have a burned valve. This is somtimes the result of letting the engine run on gas too long before switching to diesel.

IL Farmer, I am not disputing the advice that others have given you, but I want to add something that you might try. If the tractor has "slobering injectors" you will get the behaviour that you are describing. Diesel injector cleaners are available on the market and well worth trying. For less than $5 you can try some out and then you will know. My experience with a used diesel I bought was that the tractor went from smoking and not starting without ether to a tractor that starts easily and does not smoke after warm up,all from using injector cleaner through several tanks of fuel, and I continue to treat it on occasion. There is also the importance of the tractor getting up to operating temperature on diesel. Good luck and I hope its an easy fix...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I think the symptoms indicate that you have low compression on one or more cylinders. It could be an injector or two that have a bad pattern, But if a shot of ether makes it run kinda right, the heat generated by the ether can make the cylinder/s run for several cycles. The white smoke is atomized diesel fuel being exhausted unburnt. If the tractor gets warmed up on gas to the point that the water is warm, and it still wont fire on all of'em I'd bet it needs to have a ring job (if not more)
Good luck JimN

White smoke is compression or timing.
