A generator queery

Wife is adamant about her Dad's old Farmall A going to the county fair next year so the whole show isn't green. Have been putting off working on the charging system every since it burned up the little box with the amp gauge in it and melted all the wiring when young son bought it home for me. (Father-in-law had the battery hooked up negative ground)
Sooo... two questions. First, what all likely will need to be replaced to make the charging system actually charge again. Secondly, the generator's big ball bearing is completely shot (bits and pieces falling out when took generator apart) so need to find replacement. Where would a person find a suitable replacement for it and the bronze bushing from the other end? All help is appreciated.
Stan

Stan:

The TC-26E Parts Catalog for A and B Farmalls is on the Cub Manual Server - www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html. This should be of some help for you. I have the Owner's Manual, just not scanned and uploaded yet.

Have a look at the parts catalog.

Also, might I suggest that you get the Owner's Manual, the TC-26E and the Service Manual for the A at Binder Books. They have reproductions of the originals and are of excellent quality. I cannot give you any info on the manuals offered here in the market place as I have no experience with them, however the Binder ones are the authentic manuals.

Hope this helps..

Also Bob M, gave you some top flight advice. His wiring diagrams are used by Cubbers and other Farmall enthusiasts regularily.... :-)

I think your wife has a real good idea there. And besides, having a tractor with personal family history is the best kind to have, and it helps that your wife is supportive of it as well. Some would call you a very lucky man indeed!

Stan, I havent used Farmalls in years so my recall is weak, but as best I can remember, heres my thoughts:

I would have the Generator looked at and rebuilt if needed (besides just the bushing/bearings) and if you use a full fledged 3 or 4 wire Voltage Regulator (to replace a 2 wire cutout relay and light switch field controller if it had that) you get better control/regulation then using the light switch type control. HOWEVER, if originality is an issue and if it had the light switch type of field control, I would get a brand spanking new switch. If it uses the light switch type field current control (versus a VR) I would either insure the old 2 wire cutout relay is working fine or replace it also. Dont forget to Polarize the new Generator!!!!! !

Many of those Delco bearings n bushings are readily available from generator repair shops or even NAPA.

Hows the ammeter look and work?? If any doubt, I would get a new one.

Hows the Ignition/Kill switch??? Again, if any doubt, I would get a new one also.

I’d recommend a new wiring harness, voltage regulator, ammeter and ign switch - also a new light switch if the tractor has lights. In the long run you will be glad you did!!

The generator ball bearing is available at any starter/alternator shop - the same ball bearing is used in nearly all Delco generators and alternators built thru the mid-80’s – about $10. Likewise the starter shop can press in a new commutator end bushing for you.

Good luck – nothing looks better at a green tractor show than a Farmall!!

Your local auto shop that rebuilds generators, alternators and starters should have the parts you need. You may want them to rebuild your generator and check it out for charging. You're probably going to need a new regulator too. The wiring may need to be replaced too. Hal
