My H likes to Hunt--Governor question

Hi all....I have a '41 H and everything works well, except for the governor. When I rev it up quickly, it "hunts" revs up/down quite a bit. If it is under a load, it works perfectly, and gives great power. I ran it on the dynomometer last Saturday for 40 minutes or so to work in the rings. If it runs with no load, it will hunt up and down. If I put a load on it it works great, full throttle response. If I let off the load slowly, it will settle in and keep a good rpm. If I let the load off quickly, it will hunt again. We have set it to the specs in the manuals, replaced the spring, etc... It is an all fuel manifold/head as original and it will put out 28 HP. Does anyone have any suggestions to try? I guess the weights may be sticky, but when we had it all apart, they seemed to be alright.

Mark

I had the same problem on our "39 H. The governor linkage didn"t have much slop in it, but that was the culprit. I had to follow the manual to the letter to get it to work right. After, several tries, now it runs smooth and steady with no hunting!

I have a Farmall MD that does the same thing. I have the throttle lever running directly to the control lever on the diesel pump(zero slop) I tried a couple of different governor springs and had no change. The weights are all good also. Any help is appreciated. I would adjust the carb. but that won't help much I think. LOL

Some of the things I'd check would be water in the fuel filters, dirty injectors and carbon build-up in the combustion chambers. Fixes may be to drain water from fuel filters, add some kind of injector cleaner to the fuel and run the engine under a strong load for an hour or more. Hope this helps.

My Super M does the same thing. and i have narrowed it down to slop in the yoke, block and pin on top of the govenor shaft. with the slop it can"t select a precise rpm. take off that breather tube on top of the gov. and see what it looks like.

Trying to adjust the carb, as Hermit said, would be a good place to start.

I had a similar problem on a Farmall C. I ended up adjusting the governor linkage (shortened it a bit) and it took care of it.

If it still hunts, take it 'coon hunting with you! Ha!

I'd try adjusting the main fuel screw on the carb a little one way or the other.

I agree with Hermit. If that doesn't work you might try cleaning the carb, the governor might be reacting to a sticky gunked up float valve.

Thanks for the advice....I'll try out some of those ideas. I think it is probably a linkage problem, so will start there I guess.
