Farmall H stuck in 5th gear

Got a 1948 H stuck in 5th gear. I would like to know if I HAVE to pull the top of the trans (which would include disturbing the tree and seat etc...) or is there another way. I've tried playing with the shifter trying to dislodge it, but I haven't been successful. I can get it into every gear but 4th and 5th, tractor will still go in neutral and stalls if I place it in any other gear. Any help will be appreciated,
Thanks

You'll get your farm work done a lot quicker if you just leave your tractor in fifth gear. :)

I get mine out by unbolting the belt pulley and moveing enough to push the rail back to where the others are or lineing them up whichever. It is quicker, for me.

It sounds to me like when you shifted out of fourth, the 4th -5th shifter rail coasted into 5th or when you shifted out of 5th, the rail didn’t come out completely and is still in 5th. You can check this out by removing the shifter lever. This is done by knocking out the soft plugs on the side of the shifter tower and then sliding (or possibly lightly driving) the pivot pin for the shifter out of the tower. The shifter can then be removed and you can look into the hole. You should see four thin (less than 1/16th inch wide) guides and the three shifter rails (about 3/8 inch wide) with about ¾ inch notches in them. The notches should all align up across when the transmission is in neutral, but more than likely the one on the left hand side will have the notch ahead of the others. You can take the shifter or a long screwdriver (or other “lever”) and move this rail back in line with the others and your tractor should then be in neutral.

The bottom of the shifter is probably worn and not a nice rectangle any more. I would suggest building this up with a welder (or have it built up) while it is out so that it is reasonably snug in those shifter rails or this will happen again.

My "46 M gets stuck in gear occasionally too. I have been carrying a large screwdriver with me so I can pop the stick out and re-align the rails.

I"ve considered building up the end of my shifter but didn"t know what the original size should be. I don"t want to make it too large so that it tries to engage 2 rails at once.

Does anybody have any dimensions, or tips on how to build the shifter up to the right size? Also, would braze be durable enough, or should it be welded?

to fix mine the local garage took his mig welder and it took just a few seconds to add enough weld and then grind it smooth to fix the rounded corners and add alittle on the bottom. Seems to have done wonders for my H. Play with it is my suggestion, if it doesn't work, then you've added too much and need to grind it down alittle, and just keep on refining until you have it right.
Hope this helps!

Thank you very much!, you certainly know your stuff. I got it back in neutral and the bottom of the shifter is all worn and mashed down, been rounded on both sides. I will have this built back up before reinstalling the lever. rails are worn too, but do you think I'll get lots of life out of them yet, or should I consider swapping the trans and rearend off a junk H that I have that threw a rod, that trans never gave any trouble.

It’s hard to tell how long it will last without seeing the rails, but generally if the shifter is built up to fit the rails the problem goes away. My thought is that if this is the only issue you have with this rear end, why go through the work of swapping it out? However, if there are other issues like noisy gears or bearings, then it isn’t hat much work to swap them out. I’d check the shifter on that one too, just to make sure you don’t have this happen on that one too.

I had the end of the shifter built up at the local garage and reinstalled it. Works great and it didn't mess up when I played with it this afternoon. Yes, that is the only problem I've had so far with this rearend, it's pretty quiet. I'm going to leave it alone for now.
Thanks again, you've been a great help!

Glad to be of help and hear back and that things are going good. This is usually a trial and error fit as the rails have usually worn some too. And really, the only thing that the shifter wear means is that it has been shifted a lot.
