I have an 856 that we use mainly use on the spreader. The other day went to hop on and no 3rd or 4th gear. The lever doesn't feel right. 1st and 2nd work. Any ideas?

This is kinda ironic, the same thing just happened to our 806 a little while ago. Inside the speed transmission, there is a small arm and a spring. Either the arm broke off or the spring snapped. Its job is to keep tension on the shifter so that it stays in position. When it breaks, the lever feels very vague and doesn"t want to stay in position, especially in 3rd and 4th gear. The guy we had over to fix it removed the batteries, placed a small hydraulic jack under the fuel tank, removed the supports for the dashboard, and removed the top covers on the speed transmission. When you do this, make sure you don"t drop the little metal rollers underneath the cover into the transmission, otherwise you will have to drain all of the fluids and find them. When the cover is off, flip it upside down and there should be a 3 to 4 inch long spring attached between the cover and the shift plate. If there is no arm or the spring is gone, that is your problem. I"ll see once if I can"t find a picture of the bottom of the cover to help you. I would get a service manual before attempting this, as there are quite a few pieces inside of that transmission. Hope this helped.

Are you ready to take it apart yourself?

Well here we go on the IT MIGHT BE this or that but any way you look at it the sheetmetal has to go the fuel tank has to go and the whole dash support has to come off then ya can get to the top cover and lift it off hope ya got a GOOD cherry picker Now as for the MIGHT BE's you could have broken a shifting fork or sheared the pin off it and don't panic as ya don't have to split the tractor to fix this ya may even had a screw come out because someone did not STAKE it correctly before and it came out and the rail moved .

Sounds like a problem with the shifting forks or cam linkage system in the speed transmission cover, or could be just a sheared key. What ever the problem the fuel tank, steering coloum, and transmission cover have to come off to find out what's wrong. Fairly simple job with a manual and hoist, but as stated before you will be dealing with heavy components.

Read the insert above..... H stuck in 5th. gear...
sounds like the shifter has lost the shifter plates.....line them up and rebuild the end of the shifter.....good luck

Ain't quite as simple on an 856... You can't just pull the shift lever out of the top of the deck and weld up the little ball.

Whatever the problem is, it's internal, that's for sure. Probably an issue with the linkage inside the tranny.

Problem with working on these bigger tractors is the pieces are heavy and the tractor is quite complicated... Most barnyard mechanics aren't equipped to deal with it, and those that are already know what's wrong and how to fix it.

I am asking because it has been awhile since I was in the trans or was wondering if there was something to look for when getting it apart. I have had our 1456 split in 3 pieces 3 times now. Twice for the TA and the last time we snapped the transmission input shaft. Too much power.

Thanks for the advice I'll let you know what I find.
