I sell a rebuild kit that has 2) seals - 2) bush’ns- 2) bearings and the gasket. I list it on ebay or sell direct. The OEM seal izz a double lipped seal it keeps oil in and dirt and water out. I do not sell the seal separate but kin give ya NAPA # 9935 that will werk but you will need two of’em cuzz they are not double lipped so you would have to install one in the normal fashion and the outer seal backerds to seal out water and dirt. If you go this way pack sum water prof grease in between the seals.

You have to remove the steering wheel. The shaft will turn out the front and clear the tractor. Mite want to also replace the bushing that goes next to the seal. When i do one i replace lower seal and bushing and gasket sometimes the bearings need replacing also then fill with 90wt when done is steers easy and play is gone also.

Hugh told you one solution. If you want to replace that seal, remove steering wheel. remove big hex plug in front of steering box. You can now turn the steering shaft and screw the worm gear out of the steering box. The worm and shaft are all one piece. You may have to jack up the tractor in the front a little to get the shaft to clear the ground. Never done this on the A, but have on other tractors that have shorter shafts. Once shaft is out, replacing seal is as any other seal. Before putting shaft back in, be sure to clean everthing off the steering shaft and have it as smooth as possible to prevent damage to the new seal when you insert the shaft.

JD: Save yourself a bit of grief, drain all the oil, put grease zerks in the drain and oil level check ports. Take out top fill plug and pump in grease until it appears at top fill hole. At this point you know gear box is completely full of grease. After that, any grease you add goes directly to worm and gear.

I have one that has been full of grease for 10 years now, and a second tractor this is going to happen to shortly. It works and works well, no more mess on steering box.

I think Hugh's method is best. It is hard to keep 90wt. gear oil in that housing, even with new seals AND a new shaft! Mine is now full of grease and does not leak.
