jpl, if it's truly a "One Wire" Alternator as you claim and NOT a GM 10 SI 3 wire alternator and assuming youre already set up for Negative ground and this is a Negative ground alternator???? (Be sure the alternators ground (+ or -) is the same way your battery is installed ????? ???? If not post back !!!!! !!!!! In case you havent already upgraded wire size to accommodate for maybe a 30 or 40 amp or more alternator to replace an original maybe 20 amp Generator,,,,, Run a 10 Gauge wire from the Alternators big main output post up to the Load (NOT to battery) side of the ammeter. That is to replace the wire from the BAT terminal on the old Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay up to the ammeters load terminal which may have only been a 12 to 14 Gauge??? Run a 10 gauge wire from the ammeters other SUPPLY side terminal to a hot ungrounded battery feed, which is often taken from the big lug on the starter switch. This is to replace the original hot supply voltage to the ammeter which may be a 12 or 14 gauge. Again, make sure the alternators ground matches how your battery is installed and then simply upgrade a couple wires (ammeters supply feed and alternator output load circuit) from 12 or 14 Gauge up to 10 Gauge. If youre just now switching polarity, the ammeter leads (supply and load sides) need to be swapped or it will read bass ackwards. The coil leads get swapped if you change polarity also.
