I just pulled the cam out of my M are one of my cam lifter (tappet) is chipped all the way around the edge. The rest of the lifter looks fine and two of the others have one small chip.

Is this "normal" for an engine 50+ years old? I think this is from the cam lobe putting to much stress on the edge of the lifter and chipping it. If I am right, I have to assume replacing the lifter will only chip the new one.

Has anyone had this happen or know how to fix it? Thanks in advance guys!

Whatever the reason, you don't want to put a new lifter on an old cam, anyway.

My first guess would be an improperly reground cam. It's not normal. And as far as stress, you can probably compress the valve springs a little with your fingers.
