Hello,
I Just had the starter and the generator rebuilt on my old Super C.
So while I was at it I replaced all the funky old wiring . Now the tractor starts and charges real well.....but it will not shut off with the ignition switch button . I was very careful about rewiring , labled everything ...anyone been there done that and maybe could give me a clue whats wrong ??
As always Thank You for your help
I'm Confused,
Joe

Joe:
Just a thought!
You mentioend rebuilding your generator. By chance is it really an alternator?
If so there is sometimes a resistor that has to be placed in the circuit. Mine is just a small light bulb; but if that resistor burns out something I don't understand happens and the engine won't shut off.

It's definitely a Generator and it is also the original grey mushroom switch.
YT has the switch listed for $75.75....I guess I'll try soaking it first !
Thanks Much for all the help .

Joe, I gotta agree with Nat. It must be EITHER the switch went bonkers or its not wired correct or its not grounded.

1) If its a battery powered coil ignition it will run the battery down and overheat the coil left setting ON like that. A switch for a coil ignition ought to have a BAT input terminal fed from the battery maybe off the ammeters load (NOT to battery) terminal via the starter switch post etc. and an IGN terminal thats hot when switched to ON

2) If its a Magneto ignition it wont bother the battery and the problem is EITHER the switch is bad,,,,, ,,or miswired,,,,, ,,,or the switch may not be getting a good ground !!!!! !! A mag kill switch works by dead grounding the points, so the switch needs a good wire up from the mag to the switch plus a good switch THAT HAS A GROUND CONNECTION.

Not to sound crass, but you obviously weren't careful enough... Otherwise it'd work, right?

Magneto or distributor ignition?

With a distributor, there should be a wire running from the starter, through the switch, to the coil. There should be NO other wires running to the switch, from the switch, or to the coil, other than the jumper from the coil to the distributor.

Hi Nat ,
I'm pretty confident that I wired it correctly ,I was very careful .

This is a distributor ignition.

I just went out and fiddled with it again...The switch doesn't feel like it is clicking in to the off position, like it used to do.
I gave the button a sharp slap in and the motor shut down ... pulled the switch out and she started right up ...pushed it in and it kept running .....gave it the slap again and it shut down
maybe the switch is going bad ?

It's a pretty safe bet that the problem is with the switch...

Wiring is pretty simple, logical stuff.

Joe, Assuming you have the proper switch for a distributor (2 pole), with age they tend to stick. The switching device inside is a spool which either makes contact in the "out" position allowing the tractor to run, or making contact in the "in" position, thus breaking the current flow to the distributor, which kills the engine. You may try removing the switch, and spraying some electrical contact spray down the shaft to cut the crud and whatever would prevent the switch from going in all the way. These switches are pretty basic and very seldom "go bad", they just get dirty enough or cruddy enough so as to impede proper contact.

You can order a new switch for $60 or try to fix yours. I have had luck with soaking them in PB Blaster and having them work.

if the switch is a mushroom shaped grey stock switch, putting a tiny washer under the button (screw it off the switch shaft) so that the washer allows the shaft to push in farther. It must be smaller on the O.D. than the hole.
Just an Idea.

Sounds like a new switch is in order. You could've checked for voltage at the switch with a volt meter that feeds your ignition when the switch is in the off position. There should be no voltage present. Hal

The next time it won't shut off, just take one wire off the back of the switch if you can get to it. If it shuts off, proves the switch is acting up. I had one do the same thing and I put a little wd-40 on the shaft with it pointed up and worked the switch several times. That was a year ago and its still working OK
