My 544 diesel is leaking oil from the exhaust. The engine runs perfectly, and sounds great with no missing. Has anyone runs into this problem?

Chris, put it on a hard pull for 8 or 10 hrs and it will cure it. Repeat the process when it starts doing it again.

Hi Chris, I believe the 544 has a German D239 the same as 674 and 684. My brother has a 684 and when he uses it on a wood splitter where it is basically running at a fast idle, to prevent the slobbering, he does not put the STOP/RUN control lever all the way to the maximum RUN position. On a Bosch fuel injection pump the amount of fuel injected is controlled by the limit of the STOP/RUN adjustment. So by not putting the STOP/RUN to the maximum RUN position the injection pump is pumping less fuel into to each cylinder so it will burn clean and not slobber.

It doesn't take much just 1/4" less than maximum.

Give it a try.

What you are seeing is the fuel that is not being burned in the cylinders because the temperature is not hot enough to ignite all the fuel. This is because diesel fuel is ignited in the engine by heat from compression.

As others have alluded to this is because the engine is not working hard enough (they don’t need to be run wide open, but they do need a load on them) to get the combustion chamber warm enough to completely burn the fuel.

Really, idling an engine (gas or diesel) with very little or no load on it is hard on it. Gassers just don’t spew out the unburned fuel in a form of slobber, they just carbon up things in the head and manifold.

I feared the worst on my 44 also when i seen that. Plowed 3 acres of 20+ year sod about 8" and burned ouut the corn cobs and the oil.

Hi Chris,

That is the first thing that a new diesel owner will notice. Every time.

Ya can't putz these diesels around; wrap 'er up and make her work. The slobber will go away.

Allan

Thanks Allan, you're right, I've been putzing it around. I had it at the local fair where I was idling it on and off the trailer, and around the fairgrounds (where it won a big beautiful ribbon).

Yep. It's because diesel fuel _is_ oil, and what you're seeing is the leftovers from combustion oozing out any little pinhole in the exhaust system.
