What is the proper way to shut down my 47 MD Convert back to gas or shut off on diesel? Of course let it idle for a while and let it cool down first Thanks for the help

I was told by an experienced IH serviceman to switch back to gas and turn off the valve below the starting tank and allow it to run out of fuel. The purpose behind this was to reheat the auxillary combustion chamber to allow the head to cool evenly.

The manual says this: Close the fuel valve at the starting tank, then close the diesel throttle while simultaneously moving the decompression lever to the starting position, then letting the engine run on the gas left in the carb until it runs out and quits. Then as soon as the crankshaft stops turning immediately move the starting lever back to the diesel position and leave it there. (This is supposed to provide more even cooling of the starting valves and help keep 'em from warping.)

However as a practical matter if you are planning to run the engine again soon (like from a few minutes to a few days...) you can simply close the diesel throttle to shut it down. But if it's gonna sit longer running the carb dry before shutting down is a good idea - especially with the crappy gasoline we have today.

Of course letting the engine idle on diesel for several minutes to cool the head before shutting down is required no matter what!!

As you said, run at Idle for 2-3 minutes. Then just close the throttle till it stops. The ign should be off while running, no need for spark!!!
run forever,

My guess is go back to gas. I have never had an MD but did have a TD-6 and that was what the owners manual said was the way to shut it down so I would think it would be the same.
