My 340 Utility all of a sudden has started burning out the 12 volt Resistor for some odd reason. What is causing this? Have had no problems with it before.

The only reason for a resistor to burn up is it is drawing to much current. The only reason for it to draw to much current is the coil has an internal breakdown or there is a short from the resistor to ground.

Thanks for your help. I have went through 2 new resistors and when I first try it it starts right up good as a new tractor but 5 seconds later it starts sputtering and the resistor is starting to smoke then it quits. Some steers had messed around it some over the weekend but they hadn"t broken any if the wires just pushed on them but when I started through the field it just died and this is what I"ve been into ever since. It is aggravating. Thanks again for your help.

Interesting!could be a shorted coil, nothing else makes sense. Replace it in my opinion!

Thanks for both responses. I had an extra coil and put it on with a new resistor and it started right up and ran for 5 seconds then sputtered and quit and the new resistor was smoking and red hot.

Assuming 12v neg ground. Lets check the wires one time. From ign switch to resistor, from resistor to coil+ from coil- to distributor terminal (connects to movable part of points inside dist., and has lead from condenser attached inside) all insulators on that terminal are good and centered to prevent shorts. If this is whats connected, and no other added condensers, or wires (there should not be) then the second coil is also bad. The coil and the resistor in series to ground (through the points) will get hot only if left on for several minutes with the engine stopped and the points closed. If the resistor is "flaming", the coil has insufficient resistance (shorted). Any other wires on this circuit are wrong!!!

If the charging system is suffering a melt down from a totally burnt regulator (inside the alternator) or outside if generator, the voltage can go to 20 or more volts. If this is the case the remainder of the electrical system is subject to meltdown, bulbs and all. Pull the Bat terminal (big one) off the alternator and try it that way, if coil tests good, and wiring is as in my post above.
