After 15 months of rehabilitation, my 1935 F-12 has roared to life in glorious fashion! I did a complete rebuild - pistons, sleeves, etc. One question, if I tow it, it starts within 5 feet. But I still can"t start it via hand crank, what can I do to get it to crank start? Do I need the engine to break in a little more? Is this a weak magento? (I replaced the points, brushes, and condensor)

jason, thanks for posting my picture. Go figure, I can rebuild an F-12, but posting a picture on this page is beyond my technical skill!
As you can see in the picture, I live in suburban NJ, outside of NYC. My neighbors don't see too many tractors, let alone one of this vintage. I'm going to try those plugs, I am using the Champions I got from Rice Equip.

After going to a car show down the street and having the joy of 30 people stand around watching me crank away ( ended up pushing it ) with no luck. I've found that I have to choke it when the air is humid to get it to fire. I'll get little puffs of smoke but no fire. In cool weather it starts fine. Here's my procedure.

Brakes on, out of gear, manifold heat off (gas only machine), throttle all the way off, mag slighty past halfway, no priming cranks. She'll fire around the 2nd or 3rd. On humid days I run half choke for a couple of cranks. good luck

If everything else is working fine I've found hotter spark plugs makes my F14 start easier. I'm using W20's in mine.

I can here the impulse coupling click as I crank it so I don"t think that"s it. I"m away from home for the next week, but over labor day I plan on giving it a good run. Hopefully that will ease the cranking a bit.

Not sure how to post a picture though.

To check the magneto fire remove the coil wire from the cap and hold it within 1/4" of a good ground. Should have a hot blue spark when the mag fires. You may want use a pair of insulated
pliers so you don't get bitten when doing this.
Coils do get weak after all these years. Hal

Can you hear the impulse coupling on the mag clicking when you crank? That is why the crank start so well. It holds the mag untill you go over TDC and lets go equivilent to 800 RPM or so. Later Bob

Well...when YOU figure it out, let us know, too.

My brother just did restored his '35 F-12, and that little stinker has the exact same problem yours has!

Odd thing: it's not like this is the first time he's dealt with these old F's as he has restored a Regular, F-20, and F-30. These three start very, very well. Go figure!

Here's ours.

Timing and valve lash set correctly? Its not uncommon for these old Farmalls to start on 1 crank if everything is just right. Shouldn't matter if the engine is still a little tight, as long as you can make her spark, she should fire up.

Congratulations on the fire up! Yea that motor may be a litle tight for a bit but should be able to crank it over soon. Take it out for a good long ride and vary the rpms so the rings seat in well. Have fun. Migraine
