Hello again, Time for my daily question about F-20's. As I was out in the barn last night taking apart the two parts-f-20's that I own, I noticed the the gear shift patteren, or to me more accurate the gear layout, is different that the one on the F-20 that I am restoring. The two parts tractors are a 1938 and a 1936 and the one I am restoring is a late 1939 and it came with cast pneumatic tires from the factory.

parts tractor gear pattern: R 3 1 4 2 gear patter on one I am restoring: R 4 1 3 2

any help you can give me would be great.

Aslo does anyone know were I can get a accurate parts book for my F-20. I have bought two of them so far off of E-bay and neither one seams to apply to my F-20. They both show the wrong gear pattern and they both do not show the right govener control of exhaust manifold. A parts book would be nice as well.

Thanks again, buy the way I got a good head off one of the parts tractor last night. now I just need to find good springs and valves for it.

I can't believe no one has said this yet....one transmission was for a tractor shipped with steel wheels, it was much slower....the other was for a tractor shipped with rubber tires and a road gear. 1936-37 was practically a definitive break as to the two choices. And of course the possible road speeds and requisite transmissions differed greatly.

I don,t think IH ever offered a fast speed gear in any F-20.In the 40's aftermarket manufactures offered a high gear change option. For the F-20,s with 28in rears fourth gear was considered the plow gear so third gear was replaced with a 12 mph gear, the F-20,s with 36in rears 3rd was considered the plow gear so the fourth gear was changed to the road gear. If you have one of these modified ones look for an IH part number on the transmission top. there won,t be one. I believe Heisler,Behlen,M&W offered them along with their front units, Been a long time ago but that,s what I recall

I wouldn't want to go 14 mph on an F20. That is scary. I would wonder what was about to fall off.

Actually I did it many times when I was younger. The only problem was the front wheels tended to shimmy a little more because they were straight up and down.

The factory set-up with cast wheels and rubber tires had a 4 speed(plus reverse) tranny. 4th was the road gear, about 15mph.

Actually, the top speed, according to the manual, is 7.07 mph. It is called a "High speed 4th" gear. An 'overdrive' unit will be on the outside of the tranny front face.

My mistake, I assumed the top speed for the high speed trans was the same as OD. In fact, I was looking at a wide front for an F20 and the owner thought I should look at buying one of his other tractors whcih had the high speed option. I think I will stick with my Behlen overdrive so I can run 14 mph on the tractor adventure rather than 7 mph.

One of the nice things about getting older, you can always look fwd to learning something new every day.

I have a 1936 F-20 with the factory high speed 4th, and I am thinking of putting my road box on it also. It would give me a good selection for speeds. Great for parades, but not too good for farming.

The tractor you are restoring has a factory overdrive transmission. Your parts tractors have a top speed of ~4 mph while your personal tractor has a ~14 mph top speed.
