Help! I need to learn how I can tighten up the steering on my Farmall A. Presently, you can turn the wheel 180degrees before the front wheels start to move. Do I need a new steering Box? Can I pull the shaft and replace the gears? If so, where might I look for the replacement parts? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ripcord TN

First you will have to find out which assy you have there are two types of output shafts one hac a taper with key and the other had a square shaft. The square shaft has a bolt thru the pitman arm and mite be loost there and the tapered shaft has a nut that holds it on. Either case you mite want to remove the axle and rebuild the whole assy. Seal and bushing mite be shot on the output shaft also top bearing on that shaft. I have rebuilt several in last few yrs and end up great shape.

Steve, You might also check the amount of backlash between the steering shaft worm and the worm wheel sector. Sometimes you can eliminate some steering play by removing the large hexnut on the fromt of the steering box and try some shim washers that are large enough to only contact the outer race of the bearing on the steering shaft and reinstall the hex nut and see how much play you get rid of. Also as Bob stated, make sure the arm on the bottom of the box is tight and no slop.

For one thing, there's a woodruff key that connects the sector gear to the steering box's output shaft, and the key wears, and the shaft and gear get "wallowed out"
