Well, I'm still looking!

I'm not sure about posting this here but I figure most people that are on the board already have a tractor and won't try to buy this one out from under me if it is a good deal! ;-)

Found a 606 gasser with a loader, 10' disc and 3 bottom plow on ebay and I have someone that can haul it for me for a pretty reasonable rate if I'm willing to wait a while. I know the 606 wasn't a very common tractor and that I probably won't have much luck finding the sheet metal that is missing but I'm not looking for a parade tractor.

I've been in contact with the guy and he has been very straightforward with his responses. He got the tractor at an estate sale and is looking to resell it at a profit. He has tinkered around on it a bit but not really used it much.

The bidding went to $3,550 on the last auction but that didn't meet the reserve and it has been relisted. Is it worth more than $3,550?

I would be using it pretty lightly (for sure less than 100 hours per year - probably closer to 50) and don't already have a disc or plow that comes with the tractor so they would actually be worth something to me.

I would appreciate any input or comments that would help me in deciding whether this would be a good tractor or not. Any specific questions that I need to ask him?

Thanks, Nathan

Here's a picture of the right side that has the missing sheet metal:

I asked him if I could have someone come by and inspect it for me and he said no problem.

Any other thoughts?

Nathan, just my 2 cents, but I couldn't buy this tractor based on seller descriptions & the 2 crummy photos on ebay - take a trip, try it out - look it over, whatever -

nate it may be a good tractor .. I'd have to say if it goes for more than 4000 It isn't really worth it .. especially since it is 1000 miles away ..

Here's another pic of it that he emailed me:

I think it may be missing a piece on the front of the loader?

I wonder if I could do a search on the internet to find someone who would go out and do an inspection on it for me? The tractor is about 1,000 miles away.

A 606 is a fairly decent utility tractor, but like you say, it's gonna be hard to get used parts for. The basic engine and transmission parts and maintenance items are common to quite a few other tractors. It wouldn't be worth more than $3500 to me unless it has a rebuilt engine or new TA, I'd say $4000 is about right with the equipment he's including. If he no sale's it again, you could always just e-mail him and find out what he's gotta have for it.

Just my $0.02 but...
I won't buy a tractor or implement I can't get my hands on first. Pictures never tell the whole story.
I think you need to look at it, drive it - then, look at it some more... I'm very wary of e-bay anyway. $3500.00 is a lot of money...
