Hauling an M Farmall

I"ll be hauling a SM on a 14000lb gooseneck, with a 05 Chevy 2500HD. The truck has a factory tow switch for the trans (changes the shifting time), and a trans heat/temp gauge. I set the rears of the tractor over the junction of the trailer wheels (between the two). Good trailer brakes(new trailer) Any potential problems that you can see? I estimate a top speed of 55 to 60 mph only. Thanks

I have a 6.0L gas. I have hauled "M"s before with a 350 and had no problems. Thanks folks!!

With the 6.0 liter gas, propably best to lock the transmission out of overdrive when towing your gooseneck with the M on it. I believe you can lock the transmission out of overdrive with the button on the shift lever. At least that is the way my Allison transmission works.

You don't say what engine you have in your Chevy. If you have the Duramax or the big block gas, you can put another smaller tractor on your trailer in addition to the M. Just the M will be an easy load. If you have the 6 liter gas, The M will be about a full load for it I think unless you are only going a short distance or are in flat country. You are very conservative to limit your speed to less than 60 MPH. There are plenty of folks out there with a rig like yours doing more than 70 MPH.

Thanks boys, I kind of figured I was OK, but it's allways better to hear from others who know, and have more experence. I am going to add a chain, as you can never have enough safety. Thanks again!!

you'll be fine, as bob mentioned just make sure the total weight of the chains, binders, straps, ect holding the tractor on the trailer is 1/3 greater than the weight of the tractor, [ when you have some goober pull out in front of you and you have to brake hard ,g forces will make the tractor act like it weighs more] this is where some folks get hurt, you cant have too many securing devices, but you can sure not have enough

I think that you'll strain that Chevy engine too much. Powerstroke will work better for that kind of work

If you"ll be loading/unloading anytime in the morning with dew or rain hang on for the ride after the center of gravity breaks over the dovetail. If your trailer has one. We unloaded ours with dew on the trailer and almost slid off the dovetail. If you have three ramps it"s not that big of a deal but when you"re working with two it gets kinda fun. Other than that it should be smooth sailing.

Your setup will haul an M with no difficulty. I haul my Super M (5,700 lb) on a 10K GVW bumper pull deckover trailer with a '99 F250 diesel. The outfit accelerates, drives and - most importantly - stops just fine.

A couple tips to add to Don's good advice below:

1 - In addition to a chain on each corner I run a 10,000 lb rachet strap across the tractor just behind the clutch and hook to both sides of the trailer. That really "locks down" the tractor to the trailer.

2 - Adjust the brake controller per the mfr's instructions once you have the tractor loaded and tied down. Test the brakes a couple times before heading into traffic.

Biggerred ---

Sounds like a nice rig.....you might want to try this -- Put jack stands under the rear corners of your trailer ( this takes thr strain off lifting thr hitch ball)....back the M onto the trailer
until the truck goes down about 2 or 3"....

chain it down with 4 chains one on each corner.....

If the truck drives like it is overloaded move the tractor to the back of the trailer about 6".

if the trailer wants to sway, back tractor, putting more wt. on hitch.....good luck
