Rebuilding Farmall B to be worked...

Getting started on rebuilding our old Farmall B,or maybe BN don't know how to tell the difference,the serial # tag is long gone. Is there any way to tell the year, I'm curious?This little machine has done a ton of work and its getting tired.We've done a lot of work to it to make it more rugged in the woods, where its mainly used.Replaced front bolster with a heavier homemade steel one, broke the old cast one right off one day, stipped off everything but bare nec. and put a gaurd on the front grill and on one side to protect wires. This tractor is for work, not parades. Can the rest of the tractor take it if I rebuild the engine a little stronger than original or should I just keep it stock? Mostly I would like to just do a little head work to make it breath better. The rest of the tractor seems pretty strong as it will pull our little H&S 185 speader, won't pull the Knight 8018 "go figure".

You can improve the engine power to a point, but a B is a light tractor so there is a limit to what it will do even with more power.
Overbore 3-1/8 high compression pistons is the easiest & most common upgrade on these.

You can tell whether it's a B or BN by measuring the length of the differential shaft housings (sometimes mistakenly called an axle housing). It's the thing many folks sit on on the left side to ride along. On a B they are about 22 inches long on both sides, on a BN they are about 18 inches long.

Br careful making the front end too strong. The next thing to give might be the front of the block where the steering box bolts on. I've seen it happen.

After the front end broke the block on ours, we put a side brace between the fron casting similar to the H & M rails. We did this to try to take some of the stress off the block when you hit something with the front end. Trouble now is the front end breaks instead...

As far as power, the next week spot that I know of is the clutch, but personally, I think you will spin out before you break anything in the rear end.
