'51 M On/Off Switch

I've been having some problems getting my M to start. Replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, coil. Last night the alternator wouldn't charge so I started checking voltages and found that I have +12v on the hot terminal of the switch and +7.5v at the switched terminal (must be a lot of resistance in there). No wonder I didn't have much spark with a 12 volt coil. I looked in the OEM Tractor Parts catalog for a switch and they were asking $51. What's so special about this switch? Anyone have an alternative? Thanks for the help.

I have a bunch of them. If someone will tell me how to test one , off the tractor I'll benchcheck them and find you a good one.

Gordo - Here's a simple bench test:

Wire the switch in series circuit with a test lamp and a 6 or 12 volt battery. (I.e. wire battery pos post to the switch, then switch to the lamp, and finally from the lamp back to the battery neg).

Any lamp drawing 2 - 5 amps will work. If you are using a 12 volt battery a 12 volt headlight bulb, 1157 or 1157 stop light bulb, is good. Or if you have a 6 volt battery use a 6 volt headlight, 1134 stop light, etc.

Now if the lamp lights with the switch pulled out and goes dark with the switch in, the switch is OK.

Nothing special about the original style switch except that it "looks original".

A $5 push/pull switch from NAPA, etc works fine - I"ve had one on my SH for 10 years or so. You can even swap the original knob onto it if you want it to look right.

it is a sealed switch. if you never get your tractor wet the $5 push-pull switch from wherever will work fine. Case IH did have the switch but it had a plastic knob. don't know what they cost but maybe you could use your old knob for originality
