I believe it is at its worst during dry weather when the plant is stressed. That is the way I notice it the most.
Alvin.

That's SMUT. Worth a small fortune in Japan or China (for medicinal purposes).

As others said, Smut. Never heard of eating the stuff though. Used to be common, but no trouble with it for several years here in Tennessee. I think it tends to run in cycles and some varieties are more succeptable. Next year try a different variety and also contact your County Extension office to find out what to use to combat it. I'm afraid it's too late this year, as treatment would need to be done at least in early silk stage, maybe sooner.

In Mexico they grow corn that gets EXTRA heavy smut on it and use it for a snack food. They fry it and bag it like corn chips but it looks like cheese puffs.

They also sell it in cans here, called huitlacoche. Pretty nasty stuff.

It is Corn Smut. A fungus. It is also very edible. Check out Internet sources for harvesting and cooking. Looks bad but it is not,(unless you hate mushrooms). I have no Idea how it could be prevented. I'd ask the county extension agent.
Fix some & enjoy

Don't know what the cure is, but I bet it's in every corn field in the US. More common than uncommon.

We used to call it Corn Smut, appears to be a fungal growth. Just recently I saw a TV report on the Value of this stuff as a gourmet meal!! Some guy had turned this curse into a money maker and was cultivating it. My nickel Dick Davis

It does seem to be much worse during a dry year. Was very bad in my part of the country (Nebraska) about three years ago. It was dry and hot during pollination. Low corn yield and alot of smut. The alcohol plant in Columbus was testing each load of corn for this fungus. Some loads were rejected.
