another Super C bull wheel/axel question

Just boought a "51 Super C, looks, and runs good. The PTO shaft wobbled a lot (bearing out), so I removed the PTO housing. I looked in the rear end, and was amazed at what I saw. The left bull wheel had a washer with two bolts holding the bull wheel to the axel. However, there was NO washer or bolts on the right bull wheeel and axel. I felt the axal, and there is only a centered hole but NO threads for a bolt. The bull wheel slides about a quarter inch back and forth on the axel. This can"t be right, is it? I wonder what is holding the axel in. And more importantly, how to fix it. Any comments or advice is appreciated.

Leo

The 1/4 inch play is not normal. The washer with the holes pulls the axel tight against the inside bearing. The bearing is held in place with a retainer that bolts to the axel casting. I haven't come accross one with a snap ring but if it has a groove it should hold it tighter than that. Could be a screw up at the factory. Maybe the bolts broke flush with the hole and the washer is in the bottom. The axel can't come all the way out because the outide bearing will hold it in. If is has worked this long might be ok if left alone.

I don't know what the problem is but I hope you report back with the details. I just noticed a couple weeks ago that the right axle on 53 Super C has about 1/4 inch end play and a vibration in that side in high gear. I haven,t taken it apart yet, been wondering if there,s enough room through the pto opening. Jim

Some times it's a little tight. I always got the bolts out.

There are some replacement axles that are held in place with a snap ring.If you want to pull the axle it can be done with out taking off the top cover. All you have to do is pull the pto. And go in through the hole in the back of the case and pull out the 2 bolts or the snap ring off and the take the housing loose and pull the housing and the axle off.

Thanks much. That makes sense (why there are no bolts). The bull gear slides about 1/4 inch back and forth on the axel, is this normal/OK with the snapring replacement axel?

Remove the transmission top cover and the axle. Since the bull gear is loose already you can probably pull the axle first and see what happened to the threads.
You will need to remove the cover to reassemble.
Replace the inner & outer axle seals while you have the chance.
Support the chassis carefully to prevent an accident.
