I have been going by the book on fluids in my super c, however everyone seems to show interest in Hytran. Is this fluid good for Hydraulics only or can it be used in the gear box as well??

You can use it in the transmission, but there is no reason to. Hytran is thin and is likely to leak through your old axle seals, etc. The later tractors that have the hydraulics in the same reservoir as the transmission do use Hytran, there is no need for this in a C.

The current recommendations for the trans is Hytran/hydraulic oil, however, I agree with you. Unless you will be using it a lot in the winter, I would go with what was originally recommended and that is 90 - I used 80-90. You will have less seapage and when you push in the clutch things will stop a little sooner.

Motor Books puts out the most comprehensive Fluid maintenance & specification books on the market. Each year, they contact OEMs and ask them what their specifications are, or if they have changed and they compile this. Then they put in into a book showing where to grease, where to check the oil, change intervals, capacities and current recommendations.

This scan is out of an old 1975 Motor Book as it's easier to scan than my new one. In the newer editions, the old tractors don't show all the grease points etc, as they do here, they just tell you what the recommended fluids are and how much they hold.

Hy-tran will work -- may even give longer transmission life that 90W--I really don't know. However maintenance on the old letter series transmissions, meaning changing the fluid, is far more important than the type that is used. IH may well have recommended Hytran as an update in the older tractors, but because of leaks, gear clash, etc, I will continue to use 90W on anything that has a separate reservoir for the trans/rear end. Somewhere there is an article on this site that explains the difference between the various gear and hydraulic oils -- if I remember right they are talking about a Ford 8N, but the principle applies to all.

Yep - I agree on all accounts whole heartedly. I only wanted to make the point that Hytran is their current recommendation, not the one that I agree with :)
