I need to change the final drive seal in my super C. I am getting a lot of oil leaking from around the axil. From the drawings in my IT manual it looks like I can do this without having to take the top cover plate off of the transmission. I think I can just pull the axil housing off of the transmission case and leave the axil and final drive gear connected. It looks like the final drive gear will drop down but I think I can realign it when the axil housing is put back on. Any of you guys ever done it this way? Will it just be easier in the long run to pull the transmission cover plate? Thanks for the help.

I"ve pulled many axle housings off of C"s with out taking the top off. First you need to pull the PTO off and then reach in through the hole in the back of the casting and take the 2 bolts out of the end of the axle. Next take the housing loose and pull it off.

You have to remove the top cover to do this and while you are apart maybe want to do the front seal also.

Pull the top cover; it is the only way to do this task!

The seal that leaks is the inner seal, the outer one is just a grease seal. The bull gear has to come off. On the H/M you can do this thru the PTO housing. I have done the C and H by removing the trans cover -- others may have other ideas.

I just did that last month and its not the easiest job. But I would say after doing it you should remove the top cover. It will make life easier in the end. Good Luck Andrew
