I called a Case/IH dealer in Delaware and they have 7 of those thermostats for the 310D. You can email them at dbigelow@hoober.com. Their toll free number is 1-800-341-4028. The price is $18.16. They didn't have the gasket, but could order it. You could probably have it drop shipped to you. You need to ask for farm tractor parts since they have garden tractors too.

Those would be the new style thermostat. They are the automotive type. 706 and early 756's had a thermostat built into a tin housing that connected to the water manifold, water pump carrier and the upper radiator hose. The thermostat was not removable and you had to buy the complete housing. They are no longer avaiable from CNH. My dealer did a search and found non in stock in the US. The last price for them was $88.50.

That thermostat does not requier a gskt. as it goes into the hose between the engine and rad.

I have a 706D, but not with the German engine, so I am not familiar with that thermostat.

What is special about it... I suppose it has a block-off plate for the recirculation circuit on the bottom, anything else specific to this application?

I'm surprised that parts for that engine would be so hard to find.

Are there any other "common" IH engines that we should start hoarding parts for?

What about engines to avoid because parts are no longer available/hard to find?

Have you tried Case/IH? NAPA may have one too.
Here's a website that shows a thermostat for the 706. P/N S-61470 Hal
