Another Plow/HP question

I'm looking for a plow to pull behind a Farmall 300 for a large garden, upland and lots of clay content. Local auction has both a JD 2-14 and 3-14 pull type plow for sale. (I trust that the old Farmall won't balk at pulling a JD implement? :))
Am I correct that the 300 can handle the 3-14 as well as the 2-14? Never have pulled a plow with a 300 so I'm just guessing that I wouldn't have too much trouble with the 3-14's.

I would add a lot of compost to that garden to mix with that clay. I shred all the corn stalks,
bean vines, leaves and tomato stalks and plow them
down every fall. I usually plant barley for a cover crop and plow that under every spring. I mulched the tomatoes with straw, hay, shredded paper and grass clippings this year due to the dry weather. That will be plowed under too, along with a good coating of lime. Hal

Thanks to all for the feedback. I think I'll shoot for the 2-14, but sounds like if I end up with the 3-14 I can still be fine. You guys know how auctions go. The sale also has several Farmalls including am M, SMTA several H's and lots of implements. I'll try to let you know some results.

I think Hugh is correct. In heavy clay and plowing a garden, better just go with the 2 bottom. The 300 will pull it easy and you won't have to worry about special set ups and weights or over working the old girl.

Well Ksfarmer, you got a lot of different advice. Personally if just plowing a garden, I would go with two bottoms. Big production is not an issue here. I pulled 3x16 with my 300 in sandy loam, but that is a far cry from heavy clay. In sandy loam I had 13.6 tires loaded to the limit with chloride, plus one set of wheel weights. all that weight is a thing of the past, today you put more pulling rubber on the ground, cut down soil compaction.

Here is how I would equip a 300 today for plowing. Go with 15.5x38 tires and matching rims, get rid of chloride and wheel weights and pull 2x16 plow. We are plowing deeper today than 50 years ago and those 16" bottoms will turn a nice furrow 8" deep.

Being that it's a garden, you may want to consider soil compaction. The 300 should be able to handle the 3-14, but you may have to weigh the tractor to pull it. Pulling 2-14 would allow you to run without a lot of extra weight which may be better for clay soil. Either way, the tractor should be able to handle it.

According to the original advertising, the 300 should easily handle three 14" bottoms. Keep in mind, though, that the tractor is 50 years old, and maybe taking it a little easy on the old girl would be a good idea...

If you have trouble pulling 3-14's drop off one.
Hilly ground may create a problem with traction
using 3-14's. I had a Super C with 2-14's and it handled it very well. Hal

On that john Deere plow he is looking at you can't just drop a bottom, it is not possible, go with the 2 bottom for easier handling and being sure you can pull it. In some soils it will pull that 3 bottom but in others all it could pull is a one bottom so I would go with the 2 bottom and hope my ground would let me handle it and for that you do not need to think in acres per hour plowed

I've got a IH 300 Ute and pull a 3-14 IH plow.. heavy bottom clay soil...

No problem at all.. Just put her in 1st and go. She never even strains (unless I do something stupid).

Second high torque, which is about 4 mph, is just about perfect to really roll the furrows without actually throwing them. But I'm talking Pa heavy soils.

I just broke in my 400 engine this spring with 3-14's fast hitch in good old Missouri Gumbo and clay hill. Its got a fire built in it pretty good, and I was in 2nd gear, and in the low side of the torque quite a bit. That durned old sod had my muffler glowing orange.
