I'm looking at a '48 C (3714) to buy. It has a right angle drive distributor, with the distributor body setting vertical, rotor cap on top. Could this be factory original?

Also, the differential shafts do not come out the ends of the brake housings. Instead it has steel plates, maybe 5 or 6" in diameter, held on with 3 (I think) cap screws covering the holes. Could this be factory original?

The three bolt covers over the brake drums are likely factory original. The shafts that stick out on some tractors are as others said for sproket drives for fertilizer and planter attachments. These shafts are not part of the brake drums or the differential shafts. They are just bolted on to the brake drums and then another cover with a hole is put in place to accomodate the shaft. The right angle distributor is probably an aftermarket item.

I have a C serial 1518 and it has the cross drilled brake shafts, so apparently they were made both ways. Yes your C would have had an IH mag.

Sounds like the distributor was added to replace the mag somewhere along the line. The brake configuration you describe is normal for all Cs.

Several C's I've seen have a cross drilled shaft coming out the end of either brake housing. A copy of an early original advertising booklet shows them as being used for attaching a sprocket that drives planter plates, but did some C's have the shafts sticking out, others not?

The distributer is a delco-remy. I am not sure if they cam from the catory with them or not. My grandpa's 49 C came with an IH distributer. I will bet that c came with a mag and someone changed it to the Distributer. My 40 Farmall B has the distributer that you are talking about and thay are a pretty nice distributer. My grandpa's c has the covers as well.

Thats my 2 cents worth for what it matters.

A '48 C would have had a magneto (IH H4) from the factory. Delco and others offered add-on distributors, even IH offered their own add-on kit later.
