Hi, I have a farmall H that does not have a generator on her, or the mounting bracket. I have been rolling around the idea of putting a single wire Alternator on her, but do any of you know if it will fit under the hood without causing grief. I want the tractor to look as stock as possible, I thought a 12v conversion would do me for now, and I can always find a 6V generator later on down the road.

Thanks,
Scott.

Changed mine over to 12 volt using the Hitachi 14231 instead of trying the Delco 10SI route. The Hitachi is about an inch smaller in diameter and you will need every bit of space you can save. Also, I found by turning over the original generator mounting bracket it moved the alternator about a good inch upward where you have plenty of extra space. I was also able to use the existing generator belt. That was a big plus as I didn't have to play around with the tractor's belts and split pulleys. Put a split lockwasher in between the pulley halves on the alternator to accomodate the wider IH generator belt. Mine works fine and starts charging at idle but this is a three wire alternator and not the single wire you asked about. I was able to use the existing wire bundle and just added the ballast resistor and a new wire from it to the distributor. I would be more then happy to share any of the deeper details if you decide to go this Hitachi route. Just send me a note through my open email. Hal

If you decide to use the Japanese alternator, I have one still in the NAPA box. The Delco will also fit.

Scott ---

You might want to talk with "BOB M" he has diagrams and a list of items you need....Some of these car or truch alt. needs more RPM to get them charging...I suggest changing the alt. pully to a 3/4 or 1"....you may have to mill out the shaft to fit alt..... I got my 3/4" pully at "GRANGER"....

a gm alternator will fit nicely under the hood of an h but you need to make a top bracket that will tuck it in next to the engine.

The Hitachi #14231 alternator fits just fine. You can use the orginal gen. mount. It is from a 1978-79 Nissan 620 pickup, also a 1980 Nissan 720 pickup. The alternator is 4 1/2" in Dia and 7" in length. You can use some all thread for a mounting bolt using pipe for spacers.

At NAPA it is part #2138130 - cost $49.49 + core. You will also have to use a shorter belt. NAPA belt 9300.

Good Luck

GM one wire fits just fine. Flip the generator bracket upside down and use that to mount it.The alternator has to be turned right in, almost touching the valve cover.
