Galen, 10 years ago I had engine problems with my 574, went through all the basic stuff, plugs, wires, carb kit, points, etc. A good friend came by one day when it was running, listened and said "I would adjust the valves before I spent another dollar" Boy, was he right - I did them with it running, every one I did smoothed it out more - Sadly. he's no longer with us, bad heart a few years ago.

Vacuum leak? Load jet not set rich enough? Getting plenty of fuel to the carb? Possible ignition troubles? How well did you clean the carb? I know, I'm asking more questions than you did.

Had to change a fuel line due to a restriction. Flushed the tank (it had been sitting awhile). Cleaned the carb by dipping and soaking. It's getting good fuel to the carb, but is now surging. The governor keeps moving back and forth, even at idle. I THINK we got the carb problems fixed, now it appears to be governor. Any ideas?

Open the main jet adjusting screw CCW one full turn. If it smokes bad, close it some. Hal

probably the screw on the bottom of the carb, needs to be turned out. you can do this while it is running....
