IH856 electrical problems

Having problems with 856 farmall driving 6 volt batteries dead after about 3 days of running time. Have replaced alternator, starter and starter solenoid, all battery cables, voltage regulator (twice), and went through all wiring looking for shorts. Turned lights off in shop and disconnected ground clamp and touched it on frame and there is no spark which tells me nothing is drawing current while it is not running. The only thing I can think of is to replace wiring harness. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me crazy!!!

If it"s the same as the 806, check the wiring under the cowling, My charging system was driving me crazy and after replacing the alt twice and two new regulators I found some shorted wires by the exhaust pipe, they caught on fire while I was wiggling some wires at the alt., luckly I had a pair of plyers in my pocket and was able to get the batt cable off before everything went up in smoke. I spliced the wires and now it charges fine. Glad it didn"t happen while I was doing field work, cause would more than likely be minus one tractor. Gene

Thanks for the replies. When I get a chance I will try all the recommendations. Can't right now because tractor is being used for swathing (putting battery charger on at night). I forgot to mention that the voltage regulator has been fried each time it was replaced. This must mean a fairly substantial short and not just a leak, right? I guess I can't complain as this is the first real problem with the tractor since it was bought in 1972! It is approaching 7000 hrs and engine has never been touched (other than putting an M&W turbo on it a year after it was purchased. I sure wish they made tractors this good nowdays. It is sad when you would rather crawl on your 1948 H, 1950 M or 1972 856 farmall before your 1992 7120(which has a growing list of problems that I have had to attend to). Oh well, I guess I can be happy they made those models in the first place and I have them to use.

Sounds like a current leakage somewhere .While you are checking things for your problem, make sure the resistance unit ( a porcelain thing with a wire connected at each end ) found just below the voltage regulator. Batteries will not charge if it is bad. Good luck!

Have you left it sit a couple of days with the battery cable disconnected, to verify that the batteries themselves stay "up"?

Ignition, or light switches can get moisture, dirt, and corrosion inside them, and bleed off power, as well as any other switch, circuit breaker, or relay.

Are there insulated terminal strips used up behind the gauges that could have a buildup of conductive dirt and moisture?

Get a TINY (very low current draw) 12-Volt light bulb (such as a low-wattage instrument bulb), and connect it between the disconnected battery cable and the battery post. If you get a small enough bulb, even a "leak" down in the mA range will cause the bulb to glow (turn off the shop lights), and when you disconnect the offending electrical component or circuit, the bulb will quit glowing.

Or, simply disconnect whole circuits, one at a time, such as the charging system, then the lighting system, etc., and allow ample time to see if the batteries stay up. When they do, you will have localized your "leak".
