I am in the process of replacing the drive shaft and constant mesh gear in my 1942 Farmall H. When assembling the counter shaft the service manual (page 36) states to be sure the spacer between the front gear and bearing is in place before driving the shaft into the front bearing. There was no spacer when I disassembled the counter shaft and the parts book does not show one either. Can anyone tell me what the service manual is referring to? Thanks, Bill in TN

I initially responded to this on the restoration board. After looking at both the parts and service manuals for the H and M, as noted the M has the spacer, the H doesn't. Since the H and M are so similar, many of the procedures are the same, It appears someone copied the M info into the H service manual, and did not omit the part about the spacer, just a guess. Been reading this board for 6? years, don't think this has been mentioned before.

That's what it sounds like. Also, have you ever tried any of the after market drive shaft, constant mesh gear and 4-5 sliding gears (made in China)?

I really haven't worked on the transmission, other than to remove the cover and inspect the gears, clean things up, etc.

My H & 4 series manual says the same thing. I have the cover off my I4's transmission now and it does not have the spacer, but there are some differences.
