I'm In the process of removing the engine from my M. I want to remove the studs so they don't get bent and i can't get them out. Is there some trick? Anyone run into this problem? I put some heat to it and still no luck. I'm not sure what to do next. Please help.

Be really careful using the double nut option when getting studs out. The nuts are at the top of the stud and owing to the length of the studs, you will generate a lot of torque when you put a wrench on them. My advice is to go to Sears (or where ever) and invest in a stud puller. They usually run $35 or so, but it beats having to pay to have a broken stud or studs removed.

You probably won't need heat if you use a stud puller, but if you do need heat to break them free, I would not heat them red hot. The studs are hardened and too much heat will ruin the temper and possibly allow you to twist a stud off when you touque the head down. If you have to heat a stud to cherry red to remove it, I would replace it with a new stud.

If the threads are good on the studs, I would leave them in the block. Just be careful with the block. I've double nutted stud's and applied some heat. They may have used locite
when these were installed. Hal
