I went out to start my H today and it won't turn and doesn't make a sound. It's a 6-volt system. Can anyone tell me where to start trouble-shooting? It's not the battery. I've got a push/pull power switch and a foot switch.

The problem is resolved. I recently bought this H and there was poor contact on the switch and starter due to a paint job. Hooked up to my newly acquired IH trailer plow and made a few rounds. Hope to sow a few acres of spelt next month.

Thanks for your help!

Jerry

I second the suggestion to check the starter. If you have a hand crank (or maybe a pipe wrench), try to give it a turn WITH THE IGNITION OFF. Jammed starter will make it impossible to move.

Take your volt meter and check your battery voltage across the battery terminals. You may have a drain on the battery. Like old has said new batteries go dead too. Shine up all those battery connections and the grounded spot on your tractor. Paint and rust are good insulators. If the battery is low, recharge it overnight and leave the ground cable off for a few days. Then reinstall the ground cable and see if it will start. If tractor starts it's a good indication
of a drain on the battery. They have master switches available to isolate your battery from ground when not in use. Hal

With the Ign push/pull off, put the tractor in high gear and shove forward and back on the top of the rear tire. this rocking action will bump the starter loose (a common ailment). If the engine moves (even a little from looking at the fan while shoving) the starter is free. If rocking does not free it, loosen all the starter bolts 3-4 turns.
If it is free and does not turn then starter, or batt, or connections/wires are to look at. Good luck,
Jim Nicholson

Janicholson, that is the first thing that came to my mind. Another way is to loosen the bolts that hold the starter on, just back them out until you hear the starter drive click, and the retighten the bolts, should be good to go.

First off how do you know its not the battery, even new ones go dead and or can be bad. I'd start by cleaning all connection, battery posts etc. If that doesn't help I'd try to jump start it by hooking right to the starter if it turns over that way you have a bad switch of wires from the battery back. If it doesn't turn over you have a starter problem.
