A neighbor wants to sell me his 966. It needs all tires replaced and it also needs batteries.
The tractor has some blowby, but runs well. He says that the hydro works well until it heats up.
He wants $2200 for it and I know nothing about hydros. Are they an expensive fix or would an oil change and a couple of filters fix the problem? Thanks in advance for any advise.

Jed if you buy it change the filter and oil if bad and see how it works in it does not work the engine hard have it flow rated the only way to tell what it needs maybe just a charge pump. You can do field work just depens how big a load you but on it.

We own 2 1066 hydro's. One acted like your 966, slip when hot. It took a rebuild and a new center section housing, (inside trany). Ours was cracked and only leaked when oil got hot and thin. Cost $4,500 to 5,000, that was me taking the trany off of tractor and putting it bach together. Had a shop in Mich. do the work. What are you going to use the tractor for? Great loader or yard machine. Stay away of heavy field work. If you do get it and fix it up, change both filters every year and hytran every 3 or more if it gets alot of hours.

So, 1200 for tires/tubes, 180.00 for batteries. Considering you now have about 3600 dollars into a tractor worth about 5500, you have 1900 left to get the hydro up and running. And when done you have a better than average 966. I'd go for it. I have a 966 and I love it.
