Was a 660 originally positive or negative ground? I think they had two six volt batteries connected to make 12 with a positive ground? I plan to put in two twelves to doubl amps with negative ground. Will this make my amp guage read backwards and how will it affect my 12 volt generator charging system? Should this tractor have a regulator or a cut out? I have a 3 position light switch and I assume a cut out as it has 3 connections not counting the ground wire. Any help appreciated
Justin

Your new regulator will tell you which ground is needed. The cutout dont care.

It should have 12 volt neg ground. Pretty sure when new they had 2 6 volt batteries.

660 was originaly 12 volt with negitive ground. Most had 2 12 volts to give it better cranking power. The diesel had glow plugs and they need all the juice you could spare.

Not sure but i think Farmall/IH did away with postive ground with the 300's and 400's or was it when they started using 12 volt systems?

You need to hook those 12 volt batteries up in parallel. -to- and +to+. We used them in series/ parallel to get 24 volts for military vehicles. Hal

Likely 12 volt negative ground. Certainly has a voltage regulator and not a cut out. A cut out would be a 4 position switch.

I have no experience with the 660, but am sure that it has more than a cutout. My guess is that it is 12 volt negative ground. I have never seen USA vehicle with 12 volt positive ground, but a few imports did have.

Almost all IH tractors had positive ground, don't know about the 660 and other newer ones. It you want to switch it to negative ground you must switch the coil, battery, and ammeter.
If it has a generator it will have a regulator AND a cutout. All generators have to have cutouts to keep the battery from running down feeding the generator when it's shut off. Alternators have diodes for that function. I've never heard of a generator that had diodes but it's possible some did. Diodes only allow juice to pass one way.

Yes, cutout, but normally that is part of the regulator and most folks would not even realize it's in there.
