Super H cam? valve? or maybe lifter trouble

I have a stage II Super H in my garage that makes a loud "clicking" or "snapping" noise when you turn the engine. After removing the valve cover and the engine side cover I noticed that as I turned the motor with the crank, the lifters and valves would stop as they were returning to the closed position and suddenly "snap" shut. Has anyone seen this condition and what is causing it? The valves don"t seem to be sticking - I can move them up and down by hand and they seem fine. The tractor runs fine also.

The rocker arm may be hitting the breather tube that goes across the valve train, they can hit, and stop the rocker from moving, bind the rocker and when it snaps back it will make a loud pop or snap. Seen this happen on these setups more than the old H's,,,, ChadS

I would suspect the cam gear. It might be loose on the cam. If the key is worn it might let the gear turn on the shaft a little each revolution, but the engine would still run until it lets go completely. You might take the cap off the mag and check it while your turning the engine over. If its doing the same thing, better check the cam gear. (As a afterthought, could be the crank gear also.) Just a thought, ken

Have you looked for a broken valve spring? I would recheck the valve clearance too. Hal
