I have an IH606 Diesel. It's pulling air into the fuel filters and cutting out after about 2-3 hours of work. I've changed the fuel filters and tomorrow I plan on pulling the fuel lines and checking for junk in the lines. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks. -Bill

I have a friend with a 966 that was having a similar problem two weeks ago. He was using it on a haybine. Would work fine for about 2 hours and then want to cut out and die. It would not stall or die completely though. If he let the tractor set for a while (over night?) it would run fine again, but for a couple hours only.

He change fuel filters, checked fuel lines and the cap on the tank to make sure it was venting properly. However the problem persisted. Finally he decided to drain all the fuel out of the tank and check inside.

What he found was the silver round tab off a plastic oil bottle had found its way into the tank and after a couple of hours of operation would suck to the bottom of the tank outlet and restrict the fuel. He used a pair of long wooden dowels to fish it out. Problem solved.

So often something simple cause what we may think is a complex problem.

Good luck

I have a DT436 that"s doing the same thing. After working a few hours, the engine will die and won"t restart for a while. I",m suspecting a weak charge pump or injection pump. The tolerances in the injection pump especially are so close that as it warms up it changes just enough that it won"t deliver enough fuel. If a line was blocked or had a hole in it somewhere, why would it wait 2 or 3 hours to stop? The injector cooling/return line system is constantly purging the fuel in the pump, so if and air bubble gets in there, it would likely go out the return line without causing the engine to stumble even. Can you see where the return line goes into the fuel tank? Sometimes it enters the tank right where the filler neck is and you can see it flowing when you take off the fuel cap. That flow will probably stop before the engine quits if the charge pump isn"t delivering enough fuel. If it"s the injection pump, then you just need a rebuilt one.

Hi Bill,

Install a clear line, Tygon tubing works well, in the return line, then squirt a heavy oil, like motor oil, around each fitting while abserving the clear line for bubbles in the fuel. When the bubbles stop flowing, you found your suction leak as the oil will temporary plug the leak.

A suction leak can leak air but not fuel.

It has to be sucking air from around those filters or fuel lines. Did this start when you changed filters? Hal

there is a hole in the line from the tank to the filters..Probably rubbing somewhere..
