A couple of months back I bought a farmall A that I am going to try restore. I've been really curious about what year it is, but so far no luck. I've been told repeatedly that the ID plate is supposed to be located on the left seat bracket, but there's no sign of one on mine. I've looked at other "A"s, so I know where it should be, but on my tractor there aren't even any holes anywhere on the seat bracket so, no rivet or bolt has ever held anything in place there. I've asked many oldtimers for their assistance, but when they look the tractor over, they can't come up with an idea either. Someone has painted it forest green with a paint brush. There also could be some yellow and white paint. Any Ideas?

If you"re anything like me.... Well, I can"t tell an A from a 100. Could it be a Farmall 100, and your looking in the wrong place for serial number? Just a thought, and probably not a very good thought.....Stan

Stan, Thanks for answering, but believe me if this tractor had a belly-button I would have found it. This is the first time that I have been around an A, but my Dad bought it in AR "for me" so I felt obligated to give him back his money. I didn't care much for it at first, but it has a way of really growing on you. Thanks again. Ripcord

Is there any casting numbers on the engine block?
Should be some on the block. Hal

Hal, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Lots of numbers. Right side of block behind oil filter housing...6342 DH. Top of transmission housing just right of gear shift...6882 DA.
Left side of torque tube directly below battery box...8638 DE
Right side of block where block and oil pan come together just aft of steering box...5*24*P
Lower right side of transmission housing about where your left foot would rest on the deck when not on the clutch...5*31*P
Don't know if any of this stuff means anything to you or not, but I would certainly appreciate any help that you can offer. Is it possible that this could be a demonstrator or prototype of some kind? Thanks, Ripcord

Hal, Thanks for the info. The green paint on mine was some trash that someone had just slopped on there with a paint brush. I bought a VAC Case back in '95 when I was still on active duty from a guy that worked for me. After weeks of me ragging him about the color he finally admitted that this green paint was laying around so that's what he used. It would have been better if he had just left it alone. Thanks again. If you should know of a standard drawbar that is available please let me know. Ripcord

Here's a website for salvageyards in your area. Hal
PS: Someone should have a drawbar.
