Think of it as High range and Low range. Like a 4wheel drive truck.

TA stands for "Torque Amplifer". SMTA is a Super M with a torque amplifer. Newer tractors dropped the TA in the name. A TA is either in direct drive, lever forward or in the torqued postion, lever pulled back. Lever is on left side of station. On M's and 560's it is left of your left leg. On 06-86 it's on left side of dash. It's used as a slower gear when engine is under a heavy load, (pull lever back). Once you get past that load, put lever forward and you get more work done. No clutching is done. IHC exclusive feature. (I miss the old IHC.) Also called cheat stick in tractor pulling. They do wear out or get abused, so thats why some are not good.

Sorta like the old Dodge Colt Twin Stick (thru 1984).2 ranges...power and economy.Consider the TA range "Power" and the non TA range "Economy".
