I am looking at a 1466 or 1566 to use on a dozer blade and as a second tractor for some occasional field work. The 1466 has enough power, but can get a good deal on a lower hour 1566. I was under the impression the 1566 series had some problems with transmissions, final drives etc. Anyone out there have experience with either of these outfits?

dad had 1466 that he traded for a 1566 he never was really happy with it(1566) because of gear selection difference, always seemed to never be able to match ground speed to power need.

McCormick Deering 10-20 in reply to MrIH, 08-10-2005 09:53:25
Greetings Gentelmen: I apologize the intrusion of this message but I could not post a message on the Farmall site (Site was down)

I have a question about a 10-20 McCormick Deering tractor we are restoring.

#1 Where on the engine can you find the what class of tractor it is and when it was built?

#2 We have a problem with the transission. We can shift the gears into 3rd, 2nd, and 1st however when we shift back into neutral the tractor continues in 2nd(or whatever the gear you were in)

Also, when we put the gear into reverse the tractor does not move at all and the engine will stall.

If theres anyone out there who has a 10-20 MC you help will be very helpfull.

I Thank you for your time

Regards :) R. Manson Smiths Falls Ont.

I have two 10-20 .You can find the s numbers on the side of the block just to the left of the carb. It may be coverd with paint or rust but it's there. You will see the tube going to the carb ,it's behind it on a razed spot. You might look on the fire wall to on the IH tagif it's still there. Not sure what to think about the gears and why it deis in rev.

We've had the same dozer blade mounted on a 1206, 1466, 1486 and a 1586. The 1486 handled it the best - but it was also the lowest houred tractor. Gear selection and a better operating powersteering system are the reason. The 1206 and the 1466 both handled it pretty well, but reaching for that shifter when pushing up miles of terraces can make for a long day.

I had a 1486 which is a very close cousin to the 1466. I had to tear the rear end completely apart and put in some gears in the high-low transmission. I ended up putting in the ring and pinion and flipping the bull gears and bull gear pinions from side to side in order to run them on the other side since they were starting to pit.

The 1466 and 1486 have the old design of bull pinion and bull gears that IH was noted for from its beginning. If memory serves me correctly (it’s been about 12 years since I studied the manuals) the 1586 and 1566 had a planetary/sun gear reduction drive similar to John Deere (sorry about my foul language) has had since their Generation II tractors came out. I have heard from others that the 1566/1586 tractors had a better overall rear end than the 14’s did, but you have one less gear in the speed transmission.

Others may have a different opinion, but I think the 1566 will work better for what you are going to do with it and is a better deal. The 1566 might not be quite as handy since it only has three speeds instead of 4. You have to decide if that is a problem or not.

Captaink is correct in his description of the differences between the 14 and the 15. I have used both tractors for field work, but I much prefer the 14. The gear selection and top speed are better. When I was young and lived on my father's farm we used both, and I'm afraid we had trouble with both also. If they were both the same price, I would go with the 14 because of the gear selection.
Just my humble opinion.

The 1566 has a different style final drive. From what I hear it is very expensive ($8-10,000) to repair. The 1466 is a pretty solid tractor. They all have their issues. It is just a matter of preference.
