I have a Farmall H with a belly pump that has 30W engine oil in it. I want to switch it to regular hydraulic oil. Do I have to do anything special to do this? Or do I just drain the old oil out and add the new stuff without flushing?
What are the pros and cons of doing this? Thanks!

Thanks for all your help guys. I won't be using the hydraulics too much, just a little sickle bar mowing around the yard. Thanks.

It won't be a problem, but my question is why? -- The pumps were designed for 30 wt non-detergent oil, have loose tolerances, and may leak if you use hydraulic fluid. You will probably also lose some pressure with the lighter oil, likely not significant.

I started out with hydraulic oil, went to 30w, then to 40w, now I use 20w50 in my belly pumps.

When it is 100 deg outside and you are tying and dumping a round baler with a belly pump the oil gets hot and thin and everything gets s l o w.

20w50 helps when hot and acts like 20w when cold.

Andy

You need a larger oil sump or an oil cooler. That would help some in keeping the oil cool.

Only real reason to use hyd oil is if you share implements with a newer tractor that has to have it. 20W-50 is detergent, any problem with foaming?

Not that I can tell. Do you think it would foam more in a hydraulic system than in an engine?

Until I have been able to find time to add a combination sump/cooler I have designed I work hard at keeping the run time on the hydraulic pump to a minimum.

As to foaming, engine vs hyd, I don't know -- perhaps just one of the myths perpetuated on this board, like the old don't use detergent in an old tractor -- detergent has been around 50 years, at least. You apparently use your hydraulics a lot, I don't, that's the reason I asked -- Only non-hytran pump I have is on an M that I use a blade on occasionally, has detergent 30W, or sometimes even 10W30 in it if I'm out of 30 -- seems to work ok.

Hy-Tran would be my choice. Just drain the old oil, unless it appears contaminated or something you shouldn't need to flush it out, and then refill with the new.
