Yet another 504 transmission question

Let me start out saying that I know nothing about the IH 504 utility diesel (with backhoe/loader) I bought. Price was $700. Engine runs great, hydraulics need some help (bad hoses, a couple of leaks, etc).

The major problem is no reverse. The only docs I have is a IH parts manual.

So, for some questions:

There is a lever to left of the gear shift, pushing this lever forward and in gears 1-5 (see what I think the shift pattern is) the tractor moves forward. It will not move when I place it in what I think it Reverse Z(R? below)
If I move this lever backward, the tractor will not move in any gear.

Looking in the parts manual, it labels the lever, the forward reverse...

(diagram of what I think the shift pattern is - R?=reverse?)

R?  2    4 |      |      | |      |      | |      |      | |----|----|
|      |      | |      |      | |      |      | 1    3     5

I really am hoping that my reverse problem is in the main transmission and has nothing to do with that lever. I say this because it doesn't look fun
to split the tractor. If the problem is in the reverse idler in the "main
transmission" then by the diagram in the parts manual, the tractor may not
need to be split.

Am I wrong? Is this the correct shift pattern? What is the "R?" gear in the diagram above? What does the
lever I am hoping is not the forward/reverse do? Am I screwed?

(I do own a IH payloader front-end loader and a Ford 1720 so I'm not
too scared to get my hands dirty. All I use them for is moving dirt and
cutting grass my small (5 acres) property. Was wanting the backhoe for
cleaning out the ditches etc...

Thanks for any help from this newbie... Dan

The 504 was offered with a reverser. A "W" suffix on serial number plate would indicate Forward & Reverse Attachment. An "S" suffix would indicate Torque Amplifier. Can you read the ser. no. tag on your tractor ? The T/A shifter is as described earlier, is probably 24 - 28 inches long and is located just in front & below battery on the side of trans. The reverser shifter is similar to the trans shifter and bolts to the top of trans.

Ben a while since I fooled with one of those. If
my thinking is correct with the shuttle shift you have a lever, rod from it is only one hooked to shaft going in side of center housing. If it has a T/A unit the shift lever has squeeze lever
on it also and where front of rod from lever hooks
another rod from main clutch shaft hooks to that shaft. The only one I worked on with shuttle shift
the transmission did not have a reverse idler gear in it.So no standard reverse was available.
Need to know what you have to advize further.

dan,..is it possible you are talking about the T.A. lever ? it is to the left of the gear shift. my 504 utility has no backhoe/loader but i cant remember ever seeing a 504 with a shuttle lever. i might be wrong. the trans should shift just as you show. if in fact it is a T.A. lever, you might have a problem in there. good luck

Dan, I have a 504 U, reverse will not work as you have shone if you have a shuttle transmision (the leaver on the left will give you 5 speeds foward or backwards)

Oh damn...

Ok, then what is the R? position on the main gear shifter used for? (Assuming that the other level, (not a T/A) is for forward/reverse)

Thanks,
Dan
