I'm looking at a Farmall 656, gas engine, not hydro. It has about 6000 hours, mechanically sound, 3 pt; tires excellent, sheet metal and paint good, The dealer asking price is $4500. Is that about the going rate for this tractor?

Beck: Question is what do you think it's worth? I'll lay the facts on the line then you decide. A 656 gear drive diesel will when working at capacity burn 1.25 to 1.50 US gallons per hour, while the gasser will burn 4 to 5 US gal. per hour, doing the same work.

Those post 1958 6 cylinder IH gassers don't hold a candle to the same tractor with diesel. Most of them don't even mearure up to a good working SM or 400 gas. To me a 6 cylinder IH gasser is worth little more than what you can see in it as a candidate for a diesel repower. That isn't all that bad either, if you consider the gas they used, most owners used them very little, thus the rest of the tractor may be in a lot better condition than most diesels.

I'll verify the part of the gassers drinking fuel. Do they ever! I've got a 666 gasser with a loader, no 3 pt, but a working TA. I paid 5G CDN for it, and it was neither high or low for my area. Very popular chore tractor in our cold winters.

Excellent price, if it is as good mechanically as it looks -- see if you can talk to the previous owner. Only disadvantage is that it is gas, uses a lot of fuel.

Beck,

The only thing I could add to what the others have said is to check the condition of that engine. Gassers usually need the works at 5,000 hours.

Otherwise, sounds like a pretty good deal.

I am in WI. That sounds about right. Maybe even a little cheap if the tractor is in good shape with good tires. 656"s, or similar gas tractors are popular chore tractors in this part of the country.

I've had some of my best deals from dealers. If they trade for something they don't want, sometimes their price reflects it.

A few years back i paid $600 for a good running A at a New Holland dealer. No hydraulics, no 3-point!

That is a good price - especially if he gives you any kind of warranty.

If that were a good price for that tractor, it wouldn't be sitting there. Dealers ALWAYS ask way more than the tractor is really worth because they're 100% positive that some clueless schmuck will come along and say, "ooooh! pwetty wed twaktor!" and snap it up.

Maybe that's been your personal experience. Appears to be well deserved.

Typical dealer price is about TWICE what you'd pay for the same tractor at an auction.
