What should the glow plugs in my 560 measure for ohms of resistance? I looked down through the board here and in my IT manual, but no luck. they are getting 12 volts, and they measure from 1.6 to 1.9 ohms.

The glow plugs can easily be accurately tested in place. It is hard to get an accurate resistance reading when very low Ohms values are encountered, but EASY to get a current draw reading. Current draw is what makes the heat!!!

I use an old SUN automotive diagnostic DC ammeter, but if you don't have such a device, simply grab a spare ammeter (such as is used in a tractor dashboard). (30-0-30 or 60-0-60)

Put 2 leads on it with alligator clips.

Disconnect the power feed wires from all the glow plugs.

Connect one clip to the battery's (+) post and touch the other clip to each glow plug in turn.

(The meter will read either charge or discharge, depending upon how you've connected the clips. If it reads discharge, you can reverse the clips, for a conventional positive reading, although the actual amperage reading should be the same in either direction.)

Take note of each glow plug's current draw, and compare them. Compare the draw to a new one, also, if desired. (Just to be safe, don't power up a glow plug for more than a few seconds at a time, as on certain models several may be connected in series, and will overheat, if powered by a full 12 Volts for an extended length of time.

The working glow plugs will usually all draw close to the same amperage, and the "dead" ones will almost always draw "0" Amps.

I use this method on a daily basis on Ford (IH) and GM pickup diesel engines, and we get an ocassional 706 or 424 through here, and the method works well with the Binders, too.

Thanks guys,

I was looking for an easy technical solution..... I guess I will do what I should have in the first place and just pull them and see if they glow. I tried to pull one of them last night, then had the wonderful resisitance idea. I think I got that from working on my 6.9 ford diesel.

They work or they don't, and a test light is all you need to test them in the engine. to put 12 volts to one plug to see if it glows is the best way to render it useless.

Hey Rob,

I think you're headed for a lot of unnecessary work. Those things don't come out easily and there is always the chance of damagin' a good plug by the removal process.

I'd use the test lite or meter method to test 'em. Why go thru all that headache to pull and test a perfectly good plug?

Robhkent I don't agree with they work or they don't I have had to take many out to see if they got hot. I have seen the time when they would show good on the gage and be about gown when I took they out.

Rob: I ran two 282s in 560 and 656 a total of 26,000 hours and w gatweood's idea always worked well for me. they either work or they don't. Your first indicator one or more are not working is dash meter not registering full when you engage them. In fact you can through the process of elimination pick out the bad ones with dash meter.

I've never been able to find a resistance value either. The best way to test them is the way jossette suggested. Hook them up to battery voltage and a good one will get red hot within five seconds. Be careful how you grab onto them, and let them cool down for a long time before you pick them back up.

(( IF )) you can get them out, see if there is anything left. ground it with a vise grip ( softly) and see if it glows.. Most of them are worn to the nubbin and new ones are put in...

you can check them right in the tractor they either work or they dont. unhook the wire from the spade on the glow plug and get your test lite and hook it to the positave post of your battery , touch the probe end to the spade blade of the glow plug if the lite lites the plug is good and if no lite replace the glow plug or plug's
