Last week I was raking hay with my 1943 H when something up in the sky caught my eye. It was a large low flying airplane coming up over the trees at the end of the hay field. As it got closer I was amazed to see that it was a WW-2 B-17 bomber. It passed overhead and continued on to wherever it was going with a roar that only four large radial engines can make. I got to thinking about the odds of two 1943 machines crossing paths in 2005, both restored and earning their keep. I did a search on currently flying B-17s and learned that some appear at air shows and rides are available for $300 and up.

Hi All!, If the B-17 you saw was the CAFs, It was "Sentimental Journey". She is in Albany NY Aug 8-11 as we speak.
She is the only one flying right now. FAA issued a major directive on Wing mounts and structure integertive. She is out of the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force @ Mesa,AZ.
"Texas Raiders" Is still at Houston, Texas, her home, with her wings removed while work and inspections are being done.
OBTW.....The CAF has the only flying B-29, Super Forteress and the OLDEST flying B-24, Liberator. To name a couple of planes that are easily recogizeable.
Later,
John A.

And no other country in the world had the industrial might to keep cranking out farm tractors AND war machinery.

The Collings foundation flys a b-24 and a b-17 around the country every year. Right now they are near chicago area. A few years a go I took a ride on the 24 - really loud and really windy as there are no side windows - it was great.

here's a link to their planes:

I think that plane is owned by what used to be called the Confederate Air Force, they have several restored WWII planes. I believe they used to be headquarted in Texas. Don't remember their current name. Seems that anything to do with the Confederacy has been banned.

Man, that's gotta be one of the best posts I've read on this site. You should've offered them a trade.

Kind of makes you go HMMMMM MMMMM MM?
A friend has just gotten into farming and has recently purchased 2 new green tractors to the tune of $250000.00. This weekend we are going to cut some oats with a Allis Chalmers 66 combine pulled by my '49 W6. The big green ones can "Hide in the grass" and watch..... ..... ..... ...

Okay. Little too much of that hay under the muffler, huh? It'll do that to ya. Never saw airplanes, but DID see some spiders on the walls, and pink elyfants one time. 1968, An Thoi, RVN, THAI STICK, see all kinds of things, but still no airplanes. Git er done, Harley
