Where is the battery box on a Super H located. I'm looking at a 1953 and I assume a stage 1. I notice stage 2's tend to be higher priced. Is there a reason?

Serial number plate will have SH preceding the number on it.

OK. Let's say i found a "SuperH" somewhere. The tractor has the battery box under the seat. This would be easy to do to any old H. What defines "live hydraulics"? How do I check for that? Should I be able to find casting numbers/serial numbers that truly define a Stage II? Were ther Stage II's built in 1953?

I have a late 1953 Stage 2. Serial break is 19234. 19233 and below are Stage 1's. Stage 2 will have a hydraulic reservoir under the gas tank in addition to the pump in front of the distributer. Although the Stage 2 seat will fit the H and Stage 1 SH, as will the pump, I don't think the reservoir will, not sure. The starter was moved, not sure if it was moved on stage 1's or not. There may be some overlap in casting numbers (date) between the Stage 1's and early Stage 2's. If you see a "fake" stage 2 and most of the casting dates are prior to, say Sept 1953, I would be suspicious.

Live hyd.is the engine mounted pump and liftall reservor mounted on outside of center housing.
Think a few stage 2 were shipped without any hydraulics. One main differance to look for is on the center housing.Stage 1 the starter is mounted with 2 bolts to right side of housing from center.
Stage 2 to left side with 3 bolts. The housings look different also.Stage 2 started in 53 with serial # 19234.

The Stage 2 has live hydraulics and the battery under the seat, same as the Stage 2 Super M. Other than disk brakes and the Super H decal, the Stage 1 had little to visually distinguish it from the H, although there were some minor differences. Both the Stage 1 and 2 had about 6 more HP than the H and speeds in 3rd and 4th gears were significantly faster. There were about twice as many Stage 1's built as 2's, production of both was a little less than 30000. To a collector, the Stage 2 is more "desireable". In terms of usefulness the live hydraulics give it an edge. Otherwise there is little difference between them. You are correct about the price, I paid $2250 for my Stage 2, somewhat more than I wanted to, a Stage 1 in the same condition would have brought $1200-1500.

Stage I Super H has the battery under the gas tank, just like a straight H. Stage II Super H had the battery box under the seat and had live hydraulics.
